Wake, O Wake, and Sleep No Longer | Savior of the Nations, Come | Good Christian Friends, Rejoice

We would like to present you with three preludes from Bach based on hymn tunes. The first song is "Chorale Prelude on 'Wachet auf, uns die Stimme'" BWV 645. This hymn is in our hymnal under the title "Wake, O Wake, and Sleep No Longer" and is based on Matthew 25:1-13. The second song is "Chorale Prelude on 'Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland'" BWV 659. This Advent hymn in English is "Savior of the Nations, Come" and is meant to sound mysterious and just a tad bit sorrowful. It is a great mystery why the Lord of the universe would want to come down to earth as a vulnerable baby just to suffer persecution and a cruel death to save a sinful people. This is contrasted by the bouncy and happy "Chorale Prelude on 'In dulci jubilo'." This is based on a Christmas hymn and is in our hymnal under "Good Christian Friends, Rejoice." This last song was originally attributed by Johann Sebastian Bach but later given credit to Johann Michael Bach.
